The Continuous Improvement Cycle: Achieving Progress and Success

In order to strike a balance between work, studies, and fitness, I adhered to a continuous improvement cycle embedded with crucial management concepts. This cycle propelled me to shed 40 kg of excess weight and transition to a healthier lifestyle. Originating from the pioneering work of scientist William Deming in the 1920s, this cycle encapsulates four logical, practical, and highly effective steps for managing change:

First: Plan

The initial phase of the continuous improvement cycle involves meticulous planning. Here, I defined success metrics, conducted gap analyses, and devised comprehensive strategies to bridge identified gaps through a series of incremental improvements. Setting SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound—formed the cornerstone of my planning process.

Second: Do

The subsequent step, “Do,” entails the execution of planned improvements and objectives outlined in the planning phase. I embarked on implementing a series of incremental changes aimed at addressing identified gaps in my weight loss journey. Upholding commitment, patience, and consistency proved pivotal for success during this phase.

Third: Check

The “Check” phase revolves around ongoing evaluation, measurement, and validation of results—a process akin to monitoring. The outcomes of implemented changes were systematically assessed against predetermined success metrics established during the planning phase.

Fourth: Action

The final activity within the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) cycle entails the execution of all identified improvements. During this phase, I diligently tracked performance data over time, swiftly addressing any discrepancies or setbacks encountered along the way. I remained adaptable, promptly making necessary adjustments and corrections to stay aligned with my goals.

The cycle concludes by looping back to its initial stage, thereby perpetuating a continuous process of progress and development. Effective planning serves as the foundation for improvement initiatives, while robust measurement mechanisms ensure meaningful assessment and comparison against established benchmarks. The continuous service improvement process is aptly named—it is an iterative journey that persists until desired outcomes are achieved. I remain committed to this cycle until I reach my fitness goals, by the grace of God.
